Editorial Photography

I worked in advertising photography first but quickly headed for the spontaneous and exciting world of newspapers and I loved it. I was privileged enough to work in the golden years of the industry when the medium was more about information rather than entertainment. Like a lot of others of my generation I was a great admirer of photo stories in the big circulation magazines like Life and the British Sunday supplements. I loved the work of Eugene Smith, Larry Burrows, Paul Strand and many others.

After I quit working for Australian Newspapers I was lucky to receive assignments from Hello Magazine in the UK. These were a great challenge and fun as I worked either by myself or with just one assistant and make-up person with the celebrity/stars. I planned each shoot meticulously as they were still a photo-story and needed to have a "flow" about them. The Stars were a pleasure to deal with and it was fun assembling the film, sending it off to the UK for publishing and later seeing the stories in print.
